Everything you need to know about the International Driving Permit.
About the IDP
An International Driving Permit is an official translation of your domestic driving license into multiple languages. Recognized in over 150 countries, it allows you to legally drive abroad when carried alongside your original license. It is based on the UN Conventions on Road Traffic.
Many countries require or strongly recommend an IDP for foreign drivers. Countries like Japan, Italy, Germany, Brazil, and Thailand require one. Even where not legally required, car rental companies often ask for it.
An IDP is typically valid for 1 year from the date of issue. You must carry it alongside your valid domestic driving license at all times while driving abroad.
No. An IDP is NOT a standalone license. It is a supplement to your existing domestic driving license. You must always carry both your original license and your IDP when driving internationally.
IDPs are issued by authorized automobile associations in your home country โ AAA in the United States, CAA in Canada, AA in the United Kingdom, and similar organizations worldwide.
There are two international conventions governing IDPs. The 1949 convention is recognized by countries like the US, Japan, and many others. The 1968 convention is recognized across Europe and other regions. Some countries accept both. The type you need depends on your destination.
